Sirens - Official Video

There have been a lot of mixed reviews on this song.  What's your opinion?  I think they set it up for failure when they dubbed it "the new Black."  There's no such thing as a Black comparison in my mind.  Standing on it's own though, I think this song will hit the mainstream pretty hard, appeal to a broad audience, and if a hardcore fan is in the right mood they can close their eyes and enjoy this one.

Your thoughts?

Lyrics:

Hear the sirens
Hear the sirens

Hear the sirens
Hear the circus so profound

I hear the sirens
More & more in this here town

Let me catch my breath & breathe
And reach across the bed

Just to know we're safe
I am a grateful man

The slightest bit of light
And I can see you clear

Have you take your hand, and feel your breath
For fear this someday will be over

I pull you close, so much to lose
Knowing that nothing lasts forever

I didn't care, before you were here
I danced in laughter with the everafter

But all things change
Let this remain

Hear the sirens
Covering distance in the night

The sound echoing closer
Will they come for me next time?

For every choice mistake I've made
It's not my plan

To send you in the arms of
Another man

And if you choose to stay I'll wait
I'll understand

It's a fragile thing
This life we lead

If I think too much I can get over
Whelmed by the grace

By which we live our lives
With death over our shoulders

Want you to know
That should I go I always loved you
Held you high above, true

I study your face
And the fear goes away

It's a fragile thing
This life we lead

If I think too much I can get over
Whelmed by the grace

By which we live our lives
With death over our shoulder

Want you to know
That should I go I always loved you
Held you high above, true

I study your face
And the fear goes away
The fear goes away
The fear goes away

Aah ah, oh oh
Aah ah, oh oh

  1. I think it's phenomenal. Between this and "Mind Your Manners" Lightning Bolt is shaping up to be a real mixed bag. Still haven't figured out where "Lightning Bolt" or "Future Days" fit into the overall scheme - but the two official singles are night and day.

  2. Really well said with your review. I didn't like that people were comparing it to "Black". I have to sit down and listen to it some more but I like it so far to a certain degree.

  6. I think it might be time for PJ to work with a new producer. Someone a bit hungrier, with more of an edge... I just don't see PJ as a pop band, and I never will. Please, guys, don't go down the same insipid path as bands like the Stones and U2 have...it would break my heart. So far all the tracks on this album have left me cold, a bit frigid even...though I do like the video for "Mind You Manners"...but, Yield, No Code or Avocado, this album ain't! Having a loving family and lots of fame and wealth can be great things, of course, and aging with grace is more than admirable...just don't let'em steal your edge... because there are so many of us out here who need your art to fuel ours! Stay true to the cause, guys. No one needs another bland, formulated pop band, not now, not ever.

  7. Ha Ha how can anyone hate on Pearl Jam....they have evolved in to the greatest band of our time. Pop...My ASS!! Listen to his lyrics...hands down best of all time!! Listen to how the band has evolved and I admire how they have great chemistry for twenty plus years... See you guys in MA next month.

  8. I'm torn on this one. It has its moments that could be brilliant, but it definitely has its flaws, as well. Matt's drumming could be toned down a bit at the beginning (lead into the song instead of adding flourishes right off the bat), Eddie clearly doesn’t have the voice to hit the high notes cleanly any longer, so why strain so noticeably during what would otherwise be a fantastic chorus, and the interlude leading into the chorus just has, IMO, a bad melody. Those criticisms aside, this would have made a fine deep track that gets pulled out on the radio every now and then. It does seem odd as a second single, though.

As for the comparisons to Black, please stop. This isn’t even in the same category as Come Back. Can’t Keep or Off He Goes, perhaps, but there’s no way this is ever going to be considered remotely as good as Black.

  9. Why are people so critical? Every time i hear a new PJ song i marvel at the skill of these guys to write and perform these songs. Don't compare, why does it have to be the next Black etc? It is a new song and i love it for that, something new to get to know the words and rejoice that they can still put out such beautiful words and music for us to enjoy. If your looking for the old stuff then go back and listen to that, enjoy the creativity and the chance to love a new song or not as the case may be.

  11. To me a love song of being in the now of recognizing how fragile life can be and change in a moments time, mixed with a tinge of regret and gratefulness. I love the "bonus" music parts... PJ grows to be my favorite band as they evolve in real life time not trying to keep up with what they were or should be, just simply as they are.... great musicians and real people experiencing life. I so get this song. xo Love this whole album, this is the song I have been playing over and over as the feeling behind it speaks to the epiphanies in life we often take for granted, nice to hear it put into words, recorded, sung and played so well. Together is captures the thoughts processes and emotions. xo
